Countering Stigma

In Goffman‘s conceptualization, stigma is an attribute that is deeply discrediting for members of a particular social category.  It’s a particular kind of relationship between attribute and stereotype.  Below is another social media campaign aimed at countering stigma (i.e., destigmatization).  Below, individuals address assumptions made about them based on their various virtual social identities, or how they tend to be categorized by others who don’t actually know them.

  1. This campaign is very powerful and speaks volumes on how common these stigma’s really are and how it affects the social identity of the individual. I have heard all of these stigma’s before and more, it upsets me to see that many have to live life trying to prove themselves to society and to protect themselves. I believe that destigmatization is a great tool to empower and also to educate.

  2. The campaign is a good representation of the society we live in today. All of the stigma’s shown in the picture, numerous have heard at least once. Whether they were called it by someone or heard another person calling another individual. Not many people realize how much the things they say affect others. I think some people say certains things that was mentioned in the campaign and they dont even realize how wrong they are because they are so coniditioned to doing so

  3. I definitely agree that this campaign gives a example of just the kind of society we live in today. Sadly many are only stigimitized by who they are because of whats they hear and never not knowing exactly whom that individual is. We only judge by what we see or hear i feel. Many of us today do not realize that the things we do not only affect those outside us but it does not say much of ourselves either. These stigmas really do affect a persons individuality. Much of this has created a society for many where they live in stereotypes.
